Staying with Thaneakea Phum from US$ 125 to US$ 3,500 loan size
Ms. Phoan her son and mother
Her husband, Thouch Thon, is a migrant worker in Thailand and usually visits home 2 times per year. Her 21-year-old son, Thon Than, is learning to repair motorbikes, and is not currently living in the village.
“My son was not a good student. He dropped out of school in grade 6, but now he wants to have a motorbike repair job and eventually own his own shop. His younger brother, Thon Thou, is studying in grade 4.” Ms. Phoan said.
“I recently applied for US$ 3,500 loan to buy seeds and gasoline for rice farming.” Ms. Phoan said.
Ms. Phoan has been a client of Thaneakea Phum since 2008 and has borrowed a total of 5 loans. Her first loan was a US$ 125 village bank loan.
Income sources for her family includes $500 per year from farming rice, US$ 1,200 per year from other crops, her husband’s US$100 salary, and US$ 1,500 every 4 to 5 months from pig raising.
“Our lives have improved greatly since we first applied for a Thaneakea Phum loan. We have improved our house, building a bathroom, brick ladder, water tanks, and stone bench.
Our farm is also more productive, we can buy piglets, and we have also bought a motorbike with our earnings.” she said.
“I want my younger son to study in university or at least finish high school. I usually tutor him in my free time and will sometimes reward him with a gift if he gets a high score.” She said
Ms. Phoan is also very active in supporting the village chief, and organizes other women in the village to attend training sessions about reproductive health and gender issues.
